Is it Time for Marriage Counselling or Couples Therapy?

Using the Imago processes and dialogue, couples transform their relationships into a peaceful, respectful and loving place where they can communicate on things that truly matter. Couples will be able to see their partner no longer as their enemy but as their teacher and healer. The conflicts turn into connection and couples discover how to give and receive the love they truly want. Thus being able to honour the differences, the passion is revived.

Private counselling sessions are 2 hours for couples initially and then 1.5 hours thereafter. Unlike other couples therapy, the sessions are longer in length. Each couples therapy session takes an hour and half vs the typical hour. This additional time is where the majority of the “most valuable progress” for a couple is made. Unfortunately 1 hour often only leaves time to catch up on previous work and talk about some new techniques. The additional 30 minutes gives the opportunity to use the newly learned techniques that are tailored for you and your partner.

What to Expect From Marriage Counselling?

The goal of a marriage counselling session is to help couples identify potential problems that exist in their relationship and to work with them to develop a positive approach to resolving these conflicts.

There are a variety of reasons why a couple may seek marriage counselling, including common issues like communication issues, sexual problems, difficulties balancing childcare and household duties, and more.

Whatever challenges you and your partner are facing, it’s important to know that you’re not alone and that acknowledging a problem exists is the first step to improving it.

When Is the Right Time to Get Marriage Counselling?

Making the decision to seek out the help of a trained marriage counselor is a big one. This important first step is often one of the many required to solve a larger problem in your relationship.

While every relationship is different, there are many signs that may suggest you need marriage counselling. Some of these include:
  • A lack of communication in your relationship. Communication is the cornerstone of any relationship. We must communicate to express our feelings, show appreciation, happiness, and sadness. A relationship cannot survive without communication, and this is one of the biggest reasons why couples seek out marriage counselling.
  • All communication is negative. Relationships are built on positive communication. If you and your partner are communicating, but in a negative way, then you should reflect on why that’s happening.
  • Keeping secrets from each other. Your relationship cannot exist without trust. Hiding secrets from your spouse indicates that there is a lack of trust in your relationship.
  • Blaming the other partner for all problems. No one is perfect in a relationship. We all make mistakes from time to time. If you find yourself frequently blaming your partner for everything, this may be a sign that you need marriage counselling.
Don’t be afraid to seek help if you feel like your relationship is strained. Taking the time to voice your concerns, listen to your loved ones feedback, and to develop a problem solving framework is healthy and will only strengthen your relationship.
